My favorite Morning Radio show of all time was the Mark and Brian program broadcast out of Los Angeles during the 90’s. It was a show that really made you feel like they were your friends, and I spent many years glued to the show each morning! In fact, I’d wager I’d still be listening to it NOW, it it wasn’t for the fact that the powers that be decided to discontinue the broadcast around 1997 or so...
Anyway, during this time, the phenomenon of that wonderful learning program “Hooked on Phonics” was all the rage, and true to form, Mark and Brian seized the opportunity to poke fun at it in the funniest way- by creating a spoof home-shopping network commercial pitching an item called Hooked On EBONICS, the program that taught kids to speak perfect urban slang!
The idea was funny in itself, but the cherry on the top was the fact that they used real kids to speak the lines (I’m pretty sure one of the kids was Mark’s son Matthew, but I can’t be sure!), and to hear the kids struggle to read the crazy ghetto speak was just hilarious!!
Whenever Mark and Brian were on vacation, they’d broadcast “The Best of Mark and Brian”, and when I realized they were airing the episode with the Hooked on Ebonics Commercial, I scrambled to get a cassette in, and was able to preserve this comedic gem for all time!

Just finished watching Saturday Night Live’s repeat of the episode with Tina Fey as the Guest Host and Carrie Underwood as the musical guest, and after seeing it again, I've come to the definite conclusion that my far-and-away favorite cast member of this season’s troop is the adorable and slightly cracked Kristen Wiig!
I’ve always loved her “Amy Adams in Junebug”-ish babbling compulsive liar character Penelope, as well as the put-out and highly irritable other half of that A-Hole couple, and it seems the chick keeps coming up with the most fractured characters that you just fall in love with!
This week’s episode, however, has Kristen performing what I think is one of her finest one-shot characters in a send-up of all those bad local commercials you see late at night on TV, in VIRGANIA HORSEN’S HOT-AIR BALLOON RIDES…Oh my gosh, this commercial is HILARIOUS and so DEAD ON with its take on those low-budget commercials, complete with wooden talking, badly executed joking, bad graphics, and cheesy Casio keyboard music! It is a joy to watch over and over again to watch Kristen’s frazzled character earnestly pimping her new commodity!
“Are You sick of the Airport? The Long Lines? Security? Danger of Terrorism?
Why not take a ride in a…Hot Air Balloon?
Virgania Horsen’s Hot Air Balloon Rides…
You don’t have to worry about Terrorists, or Long Lines… and it’s just YOU,,, and ME…Up in the Air! Whoooaaaaaaaa… “
All this delivered in an extremely cute, naïve and sincere deadpan drawl…
THIS IS CLASSIC!
Thumbs Up for Kristen! She’s the reason I’M gonna be tuning in next season, fer sure!
